Grand Theft Auto monologues

Sick of the 80's music that pumps through every car you jack in GTA: Vice City? Then check out a new mod that lets you listen to an army recruiter, driving instructor or yo mama as you whore and maim your way through the game as Tommy Vercetti. The monologues were performed by voice actors and can be loaded on your Xbox or PC to replace the game s in-built soundtrack. My favorite is the book on 8-track version of Terminator as read by Ahhhhnold. More »

Xbox 2 won't make CES?

Some development friends of mine are hearing that the Xbox 2 won t make a Consumer Electronics Show premier after all. Despite rumors that Gates will unveil the next-gen Xbox during his keynote at the annual show, the latest gossip is that the unveiling is more likely to come at the Game Developers Conference in March. I doubt this will have any real impact on the Xbox 2 s launch, it just gives Microsoft more time to come up with a hot d but. I have a call in to the Xbox people, but no word yet. More »

Redneck Santa picks holiday loser

Apparently Santa s a beer-swilling, tobacco-spitting yahoo redneck whose idea of a good time is watching cars chase each other around in a circle for three days. In an exclusive interview with the morbidly obese elf, The (Mount Carmel, PA) News-Item discovered that Santa s top holiday pick is NASCAR: Chase for the Cup 2005. Hey Santa, ever hear of a little thing called Halo 2 or GTA: San Andreas? More »

The hunt for PSP goodness

Sounds like getting your hands on a PSP pre-order ticket in Japan is akin to finding twins into threesomes. Sony actually launched a pre-order pre-order drive for the PSP, letting people sign up for the right to eventually pre-order the handheld device. The people who lucked into the little pre-order tickets ended up spending a lot of time roaming from game store to game store hoping to find a pre-order line forming. More »

GTA: San Andreas morality

GTA: San Andreas as after-school special? Maybe that s a stretch, but the game does have its own form of positive message. Buried under all of that violence, gang-banging and hoing is a light anti-drug motif. CJ may bang with the best of them, but he doesn t use drugs or like people who do and at least one radio station DJ is very anti-drug. Too bad they choose anti-drugs instead of anti-violence as their message: I d rather be reading about a group of teens found eating their weight in Twinkies than some angry geek plotting the decimation of his local high school. Video games killed the computer

People are too stupid for computers to survive. What with the mouse and the whole having-to-be-able-to-type thing, computers are just too complex to win the battle for the family room; instead game consoles will morph into tomorrow s entertainment system. I'm looking forward to the day when the Xbox replaces medical equipment. Heart valve replacement, was that A,B,A,A,A or A,B,A,A,B?

Valve wins Cyber Cafe fight

Valve got a chance to legally bitch slap Sierra/Vivendi Universal Games Monday. A U.S. Federal District judge granted Valve a summary judgment in their case involving Cyber Cafes and copyright infringement. Basically, Valve sued Sierra Online, saying that the company didn't have the right to distribute their games in cyber cafes because Valve was handling that with their own service. Then, out of spite, Sierra/Vivendi prevented Valve from allowing players to unlock Half-Life 2 early. The details are really too boring to go into. The only thing that really matters is that the people that kept us all from playing Half-Life 2 early got their asses handed to them in court. More »

Postal 2 banned a year after release in New Zealand

New Zealand banned Postal 2 in a not-so-knee-jerk reaction to the game s heavy violence and obnoxious humor. It took the country s Office of Film and Literature Classification a year to decide whether the game needed banning or just a nice talking to. The ban notice comes just in time to bolster flagging sales of the now outdated game. Anyone caught with a copy of the game could face a $1,400 fine and the ridicule of their geeky friends. More »

Computer game can detect lazy eye

How's this for a shitty choice: Games may cause glaucoma, but they may also help prevent lazy eye. Maybe the pediatric ophthalmologists who developed the diagnostic PC game, VisionQuest 20/20, didn t realize they were creating something that Japanese researchers say can lead to blindness. Now that s irony for you, but is it dramatic or Socratic? More »

Games teach serious skills

Games don t just perfect your killing skills; you can also use them to learn how to run a university, handle chemical attacks and deal with currency trading. It may never rival the multi-billion dollar industry of entertainment games, but serious games continue to grow in popularity. With the tremendous success of the brain-washing smash hit, American s Army, other industries are turning to games to teach the boring and otherwise mundane. More »

DS hacks

First they tore it apart, now DS fans are hacking the dual-screened Nintendo device. So far, hackers have only accomplished two hacks. One hack allows you to create a USB power cable for the DS. The second hack tracks the wireless packets sent back and forth between DS units when they are using the built-in Pictochat program. Now eight graders around the world will be able to find out who the cute girl in the first row has a crush on. More »

PS3 confirmed for 2006

The PS3 won t be making any appearances until next year s E3 and won t be in our hot little hands until 2006. In a surprisingly to-the-point press release, Sony, IBM and Toshiba confirmed that the new console s processor will be detailed in February and that it will go to market in 2006. This gives Microsoft s Xbox 2 a good half-year or so head start, which they will likely squander. More »

Mario 128 coming to Gamecube with twice the mustache

Fabled Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto says Mario 128 will be coming to the GameCube. The long vaporware game has been on the minds of frantic Cube owners since its first mention back in 2000. Miyamoto had nothing to say about the game s content or release date, so this was really just his way of taunting us. More »
