Doom: The Bored Game

Finally, someone s taken all of the monotonous, shooting, running, solving, and monsters out of the Doom franchise and focused in on what made the game good: The instructional manual. Oh, that and cheap plastic figures and dice. Doom: The Boardgame runs for about the same price as the computer game. So pop some popcorn and get ready for some boarding goodness. More »

Where's My PSP?

Why does Electronic Arts hate me so? I got an email Friday asking me if I had a Playstation Portable yet, because they had all kinds of cool games to send me if I did. Do you? We really want to send you these cool games. Oh, you don t? Awwww, too bad, because we really wanted to give you all of these cool games. They even went out of their way to write, in bold no less, that they had no PSPs, just cool games. More »

Gran Turismo 4: Too Little, Too Late?

After the years of waiting for Gran Turismo 4, turns out no one might want it when it hits shelves. Gamesblog makes a good point: For the most part gamers have moved past the world of pristine cars and slick unchanging graphics and into the world of collision damage and customization. Will anyone really want to play a game that doesn t have a ludicrously good crash physics engine? More »

Dressed to Game

Lots of companies make T-shirts, ties, heck, even underwear, for their games. But only Capcom pushes it up a notch by making replicas of their characters in game clothes available for purchase. You can buy Biohazard 4 Leon s long sleeve shirt, weathered blue jeans or even his belt on the site. If things get cold you can pick up a spiffy jacket or engineer boots. It s all perfect for that creepy game-obsessed stalker in your life. More »

Pokemon Causes Cancer

No, not that annoying little yellow critter from Nintendo, I m talking about the POK Erythroid Myeloid Ontogenic factor also known as POKEMON. What the hell the scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have against Pokemon, besides the typical laundry list of complaints, is beyond me. Maybe they thought it would be funny to name a carcinogenic after a cartoon character. One day some 5-year-old is going to be able to tell his buddies at school that Pokemon killed his mom. More »

N-Gage Takes More Then a Year to Tie Ds's First Month

Night of the Naked Gnomes

They came in loin clothes and nothing else, hundreds of angry little gnomes protesting the character balance of the warrior class in World of Warcraft. A bunch of gamers who play warriors decided Saturday night to create new Gnome characters and hop around in mass on the Argent Dawn server because they are ticked about the way their character class was adjusted in an update. Not sure what naked Gnomes have to do with all of this, but they re fun and easy to kill. All the protesters received a three hour ban from the game and a stern warning. Word to the wise: One level one Gnome easy to kill, 150 level one Gnomes not so easy. More »

Paper Katamari Damacy Prince

If the paper nose and the square cat weren t enough Katamari Damacy origami for you, then how about the prince himself? Making the prince is a neat little bit of paper cutting and folding. Granted, if I did it, it would look like a ball of compact trash, especially right before I tossed it in my trash can in frustration. More »

GPS Tron

GPS::Tron is a reality based game that uses GPS and cell phones to track movement and decide at what point you have crashed into your opponents glowing red cyber trail. Like in the classic Tron cyberbike game, and the cell phone Snakes game, you leave a line of color behind you as you move. The object of the game is to corner you opponent and make him eat his own virtual dust. Adding cell phones and GPS to the formula means it tracks actual movement, converting 200 meters into one centimeter and then displaying it on a map. Since both players are plopped down on a virtual battlefield, you can be on different continents and still compete. You can also travel by foot, car, boat, plane, or Cyberbike, if you can find one. Sex: Online, Hardcore, All the Time

I'm happy to see that everyone is discovering the hardcore sex, devil worshiping and venereal diseases of Sociolotron. I wrote about the massively multiplayer game about a year ago for the Rocky Mountain News and then kicked off a semi-regular column by a girl gamer who became a big Sociolotron Ho. The game looks a lot like The Sims Online but allows very, very graphic sex, human sacrifice and lots of MDK (i.e. murder-death-kill.) There are laws in the game, however, complete with judges, attorneys and evidence. It's fascinating to watch people discover this game, then spend the next week boinking anyone they can find. More »

PSP Takes on iPod

With news of Sony s planned PSP music download service, you can t help but start thinking that the big S has their eyes on the iPod. They did that major mea cupla about their MP3-hating not too long ago, and the PSP is a multimedia device, so gunning for the iPod makes sense. The big question, as Keith Stuart over at Gamesblog points out, is whether people really want convergence in their media. Do you want something that can play movies, music and games? More »

Dance Dance Revolution: Fat Folks Good for Business

I ve been working on a story about exercise and gaming for the Rocky Mountain News this month and Thursday I was talking to Jason Enos, the American product manager for Dance Dance Revolution. Enos is pretty psyched about the game s rising popularity in North America. The game sold 1.2 million copies last year; that doubles it s total sales since 2001. More »
