Konami All Cashed Up

Sorry numbers fans. We got a little caught up in the news about Metal Gear Solid yesterday, forgot that the whole point of the analysts meeting in the first place was to discuss the company's finances. Which, if you're dying to know, are looking rosy. The whole company (games, slot machines & gyms) was up on the previous quarter, including the games division, which saw a sales increase of 8.6%, with net revenues totalling USD$292 million. Surprised? That's what happens when you own Pro Evo and when you release Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. You make money.

Blu-Ray Was Totally Worth It

So PGR4 has issues fitting on a DVD. They had to axe day/night cycles, because they didn't fit on the disc. Which has a few PGR fans feeling blue. Sony, though, Sony are happy. They're chirping like little baby birds at feeding time. Dave "Don't Hate On My Blu-Ray" Karraker:
We took a lot of heat at launch for including Blu-Ray in PS3. Now it looks like that investment is being justified.

Tour of Giant Gundam

Daaaaamn talk about s a big robot! That's the 1/1 scale Gundam Crisis attraction we posted previously. Located at the base of Mt. Fuji, Gundam Crisis is impressing Japanese nerds. Some dude clamed, "It looks like the real thing." As if he's seen one! The wait to get up and close with the giant mecha is 40 minutes. Anyone who has been to Tokyo Disneyland will tell you that's nothing. The attraction is supposedly very real and features rad battle scars. Not just anyone can get in the cockpit, though. You must complete all the "missions" in the 8 minute time limit. Missions involve running around and collecting intel via a remote terminal. What's in the cockpit? A special video. Swell.

Phil Harrison Speaks On Madden, Home, Wipeout HD

The kids from 1UP and EGM sat down with Sony Worldwide Studios' king cue ball Phil Harrison at E3 2007 to chat all things PlayStation software related. Of interest to console torch and pitchfork bearers is Harrison's response to questions about Madden NFL 08's underwhelming performance on the PLAYSTATION 3. Phil, why does the PS3 version run a last-gen 30 frames per second? More »

Mark Rein Ready For Epic's Ass To Get Kicked

As good as Gears was, and as many copies as it sold, you always got the impression it was keeping Halo's seat warm at the head of Microsoft's first-party table. You know, keep the kids shooting on the 360 until Halo 3 came out. Think that's a bit harsh? Rubbish, it's the truth. Even Mark Rein agrees, to the point where he's come to terms with it:
All those records we broke with Gears of War are going down on September 25. We've had a nice nine, ten months of being the record holder, and now we're going to get our ass kicked. In a good way.
You're a good sport, Mark.

Re: Car Navi Blows Chunks

Our van has an aftermarket GPS navigation system. I love it. I end up using it even when I don't need to, which endlessly annoys my wife.

Today's the last day of the month, and the beginning of a real whopper of a month. While July felt hectic with just E3, August has BlizzCon, QuakeCon, Fan Faire, PAX and Leipzig. It is going to fly by. I spent much of the day arranging our coverage for the three cons later this week. I suspect the most interesting will be BlizzCon, followed by QuakeCon and then Fan Faire. In the middle of my planning I decided to shoot the Penny Arcade guys an email begging them to move PAX to the first half of the year, when absolutely nothing happens. I have no idea how they feel about that, but it sure would make my life easier. :)

Metal Gear Solid 2 Gets Re-Analyzed

mgs_torture.jpg

After attempting to recount the plot line of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2 last night over beers—and failing spectacularly—I was pleased to see Simon from GameSetWatch linking to an extremely detailed analysis of the game's narrative, analyzing the parallel, sometimes complimentary themes of the first two Metal Gear Solid scripts. A good read for anyone who has gotten over their Raiden hate and wants to revisit the often convoluted MGS storyline.

PS3 To Get DVR Functions, Digital Tuner In 2008

MCV's prediction that Sony may be soon unveiling support for terrestrial digital broadcast service Freeview for the PLAYSTATION 3 is looking spot on following comments from Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand boss Warwick Light. He told Kiwi outlet The Press that the company is "hoping next year... to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder." His timeframe? First quarter of 2008, alongside the New Zealand launch of Freeview. More »

Army of Two Gameplay

Over two minutes of EA's Army Of Two gameplay, not a second of "witty" dialogue and a brief look at the game's weapon customization system. Lots of co-op shooting, tasty hovercraft piloting and a plethora of crouched walking are all featured. These two must make weekly trips to the chiropractor.

Japan Gets Halo History Pack

And by Halo History Pack, Microsoft of Japan means a "Platinum Collection" package featuring both Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 for a paltry 2,980 yen (about $25 USD). Microsoft is readying the super-budget two-in-one Halo History Pack to get Japanese gamers—okay, Western ex-pats—hyped up for the Xbox 360 release of Halo 3. The double pack, with built-in backward compatibility updates, ships to Japanese retailers on September 12.

Sick to death of hearing about everything Halo yet? You'd better get out of this chickenshit outfit now then, buddy, 'cause it's only going to get worse.

George Harrison Reportedly Retires From Nintendo

GameDaily Biz is reporting that Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications George Harrison—rumored to be departing the company alongside NoA employees Perrin Kaplan and Beth Llewelyn—has announced his "early retirement" to employees today. Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the departure.

Harrison, a 15-year vet at Nintendo, was reportedly one of the employees who would opt out of relocating to the company's new California digs in an effort to be closer to Silicon Valley partners and Bay Area third-party publishers.

Bungie Details Halo Coop

4pFTW.jpg

He may not respond to my annoying little IMs about Halo 3 Co-Op, but former Kotakuite Luke Smith did one better and posted all of the game's Co-Op details on Bungie... I suppose that's OK, it is his job now.

Here's the details, the game will support four-player co-op via both Live and System Link with up to two player per a television on split-screen. To access the game you go into the lobby and set the mode as Campaign and then invite your friends. Unfortunately, you won't be able to drop into an active co-op game.

The lead gamer plays as the EmCee, while player two gets to control the Arbiter and players three and four control "two brand new Elite characters." Hit the jump for their descriptions.

Analysts Say 360 "Running Behind" On Sales, Apply Pressure

DFC Intelligence—which I assume to take the physical form of a giant, flaming emerald eye—has surveyed the console landscape with its all-knowing gaze, issuing its forecast for the coming year. It's unsurprisingly good news for the Wii and Nintendo DS, but less positive for Microsoft and its Xbox 360. With even the PLAYSTATION 3 looking meet the firm's forecasts, it's a little puzzling that they consider the 360 to be "running behind where they should be to maintain a strong market position." DFC even warns that Microsoft may "flirt with numerous unsavory scenarios" (ROWR!!) including a third place showing in the console marathon. More »

Crytek Says Crysis For Consoles Possible

crysis_consoles.jpg PC pretty boy Crysis has long been rumored—probably a result of platform envy—to make its way to the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3, with Crytek regularly denying said rumors. Recently, however, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli has given hope to those who want to shoot the bejeezus out of hordes of nameless soldiers and alien invaders without investing in a new graphics card, telling PC Gamer that "Crysis could be on the 360 or PS3." Oh, really?! More »
